What is Shamanic Healing?
Shamanic Healing is drawn from the oldest healing tradition we know of — practices found in indigenous cultures on every continent, reaching back tens of thousands of years. At its heart is a simple idea shared by all of these traditions: true wellness includes the spirit. Illness, low energy, and persistent unhappiness are seen not only as physical events but as signs that something within has been lost, burdened, or knocked out of balance.
A shamanic practitioner works to restore that balance — using rhythm, ritual, and focused intention to help you release what weighs on you and reconnect with your own vitality.
How it works
The central tool of shamanic work is the journey: a deeply relaxed, dream-like state reached through steady drumming or rattling. In this state — familiar to modern science as the drowsy threshold between waking and sleep — the everyday thinking mind quiets, and the deeper layers where emotions and memories live become easier to reach.
Within the journey, the practitioner works with imagery and energy around your stated intention: releasing old burdens, calling back scattered vitality, or clearing what no longer serves you. Whether you understand this in traditional terms or simply as deep, symbol-rich relaxation, the effect people report is consistent — a sense of lightness, emotional release, and renewed energy that often deepens over a course of sessions.
What a session feels like
You lie comfortably, fully clothed, in a calm and quietly prepared space. After talking through your intention, you close your eyes and let the drumbeat carry you — most people drift quickly into a warm, floating state. Time passes strangely; forty minutes can feel like ten. Afterwards there is no rush: you are grounded gently, offered water, and given space to talk about what surfaced. Many people sleep unusually well that night.
What a session looks like
- 1
Setting the intention
The session opens with quiet conversation about what you are carrying and what you hope to release, framing a clear intention for the work ahead.
- 2
Creating sacred space
The practitioner prepares the space in the traditional way — often with sound, smoke, or simple ritual objects — creating a calm, protected atmosphere in which deep relaxation comes easily.
- 3
The healing journey
While you rest with eyes closed, steady drumming or rattling guides you into a deeply relaxed, dream-like state. The practitioner works with energy and imagery on your behalf, focused on your intention.
- 4
Return and grounding
You are gently guided back, and the session closes with grounding, water, and time to talk through what arose — turning the experience into insight you can carry into daily life.
Shamanic Healing — common questions
Do I need to believe in anything for it to help?+−
No particular belief is required. Many people simply experience the sessions as profound guided relaxation with ritual and rhythm — and the calm, release, and clarity that follow do not depend on how you choose to interpret them.
What does a shamanic journey actually feel like?+−
Most people describe a pleasant, dream-like state somewhere between waking and sleep, carried by the steady drumbeat. Imagery, memories, or emotions may surface; some people simply feel deeply rested. Every journey is different, and all of them are gentle.
How is this different from meditation or relaxation therapy?+−
The relaxed state is similar, but shamanic healing adds intention and ritual: the session is framed around something specific you want to release or restore, and the practitioner actively works on your behalf rather than leaving you to practise alone.
